As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy's legendary Motown Records made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and race. No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop, Motown celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company's founding.

Motown, of course, stands for more than just the historic music. The label and its remarkable legacy is a reflection of the hard work of dedicated individuals overcoming incredible obstacles to achieve great success. Nearly a half-century ago, on January 12, 1959, to be exact, a young African-American songwriter named Berry Gordy founded Tamla Records with a loan of $800 from his family, marking the birth of the "Motown Records Corporation." A man of vision, drive, talent and determination, Berry Gordy was also a producer, innovative entrepreneur, and teacher. The phenomenal success of Motown Records is a tribute to all that he embodies and all the talent that he brought out in others. Under his leadership, and through determination and support of the Motown family of artists, Gordy forged new grounds for minorities and made the "Motown Sound" a worldwide phenomenon beloved by millions.

Berry Gordy always learned from all his experiences and applied them to his business. He put the tedious time he spent working on the assembly line at Detroit's Lincoln-Mercury automobile plant to good use: "Every day I watched how a bare metal frame, rolling down the line would come off the other end, a spanking brand new car. What a great idea! Maybe, I could do the same thing with my music. Create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door, an unknown, go through a process, and come out another door, a star." That little thought that came to him while running up and down that assembly line became a reality we now know as "Motown."

When Motown was housed in its famed "Hitsville U.S.A." offices at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it was not just a location; history would be made there. In fact, Berry Gordy created a twenty-four hour hit-making and artist development factory, nurturing the artistic talent of the singers, writers, producers, as well as, corporate executives. Today, Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard, but an institution, a state of mind, a way of life, a style, the "Sound of Young America." The distinctive, upbeat and uplifting music brought together pop and soul, white and black, old and young, like never before and continues to this day. Regardless of race or social background, teenage girls admired Diana Ross and teenage boys pretended to be Smokey Robinson. Motown became the heartbeat of American pop music. With multi-platinum artists ranging from the Miracles, Temptations, Four Tops and Supremes to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson 5, the House That Gordy Built had and has no rival. Motown defined the term "crossover" not only on record and stage, but also behind the scenes. After breaking down barriers and having pop radio embrace Motown artists, Berry Gordy set his sights on television. He booked his artists on popular shows such as American Bandstand and the Ed Sullivan Show, making history as the first African-American artists on these shows. After captivating national audiences with repeat performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Supremes were the first R&B act to play the country's most prestigious night club, New York's Copacabana, which paved the way for other R&B acts into the top cabaret circuits around the world.

Motown was the first African-American-owned record label to reach widespread national acclaim, Motown broke down racial prejudice by becoming the most successful independent record company in history and the most successful African-American owned business in America.

After Gordy purchased that first Detroit property, he converted the garage into a small recording studio and the kitchen into the control room. The company's first signing was the Miracles, led by Smokey Robinson, and its first release was Marv Johnson's "Come to Me," January 21, 1959. But its first major hit was Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)," a song co-written by Gordy himself, which reached #2 on Billboard's R&B chart in 1960. A year later, the Miracles would score the company's first million seller with "Shop Around." That same year, teen girl group the Marvelettes landed the company's first pop No. 1, "Please Mr. Postman," while the label signed two young groups, the Supremes and the Temptations. Within three years, those two groups would lead Motown into the mainstream, when the Supremes launched an unprecedented string of five consecutive No. 1 hits, starting with "Where Did Our Love Go," while the Temptations released the eternal Motown classic, "My Girl." In 1968 the company had five records out of the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and accomplished another unprecedented feat by seizing the top three spots for a full month.

Upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Motown's founder was given the following tribute: "Gordy endeavored to reach across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin. Under his tutelage, Motown became a model of black capitalism, pride and self-expression and a repository for some of the greatest talent ever assembled at one company. . . Motown's stable of singers, songwriters, producers and musicians took the concept of simple, catchy pop songs to a whole new level of sophistication and, thanks to the music's roots in gospel and blues, visceral intensity. . . After Motown, black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste. . . Aesthetically no less than commercially, Motown's achievements will likely remain unrivaled and untoppable."

Today, the label is part of the Universal Music Group, with its classic recorded music catalog managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The timeless songs from Motown between 1959 and 1985 are represented by EMI Music Publishing.

From late 2008 to the end of 2009, Universal Music Group and EMI Music Publishing will mark the historic Detroit label's musical achievements with a series of initiatives. Notably, Universal Music Enterprises will issue monthly music releases in both physical and digital formats, with bonus tracks enhancing these packages. Details will be announced as each new package approaches.

Also upcoming throughout the celebration are releases of classic Motown Television specials in a series of DVD collections and INSIDE MOTOWN, a multi-part documentary on how the company was built.

"Festival of the Arts BOCA", welcomes a spectacular duo of notable Latinas who are taking the Classical Music World by Storm

As is the case with the renowned "Tuscan Sun Festival" in Italy and the "Festival del Sole" in Napa, California, the Festival of the Arts BOCA serves as the stage for some of the world's top classical music talent, while also highlighting exceptional Latino talent. Now in its third year, the Festival of the Arts BOCA once again prepares to offer South Florida audiences a magnificent eleven day program with the finest in classical music and literature. This year the Festival will treat music lovers to two extraordinarily gifted Latinas that are capturing the classical scene, one a master at the piano the other at the baton. The Festival will take place at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater in Boca Raton, Florida from March 5th to the 15th.

Conductor Alondra de la Parra has gained widespread attention for her spellbinding performances whether leading the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, or orchestras in Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, and the United States. One of the most compelling conductors of her generation, she holds the distinction of being the first woman from Mexico to conduct in New York City. Most recently, The New York Times said, "With incisive gestures, Ms. de la Parra elicited a vibrantly nuanced performance whose bristling conclusion had the audience on their feet."

The Venezuelan-born pianist, Ana Karina Alamo has been acknowledged by critics and audiences for her ability to project a rare vulnerability on stage, while drawing upon her virtuosic abilities. Performing her first recital at the age of six, Ms. Alamo has gone on to appear at some of the world's most prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall (New York), and Ehrbar Hall (Vienna). A highly regarded soloist, Ms. Alamo has also performed at the White House at a private reception for former President Bush.

In addition to these two accomplished musical marvels, the 2009 Festival will also serve as the epicenter to an epic celebration of the 50th anniversary of Itzhak Perlman's debut in the U.S., a milestone in a career that spans thousands of performances and numerous prestigious awards, with four unique and distinct performances. The Festival will also welcome a number of other exceptional classical music and literary talent, including: The Russian National Orchestra, famed conductor Mikhail Pletnev, celebrated cellist Nina Kotova, Grammy Award Winning vocalist Kelley O'Connor, renowned author Salman Rushdie, master pianist Jeremy Denk and so many more.

On February 8, 2009, two band leaders will be seated side by side at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony hoping their combined efforts will result in an award for the "Best Latin Jazz Album" of 2008.

Dave Samuels of Caribbean Jazz Project and Joe McCarthy and his Afro Bop Alliance have already landed a 2008 Latin Grammy for their album entitled Afro Bop Alliance. Last year, their two great bands joined forces to make some exceptional music, producing one of the hottest Latin Jazz recordings of 2008.

On the Heads Up label, it's the third recording for the Maryland-based Afro Bop Alliance. Teaming up with the Caribbean Jazz Project, the group swelled to the size of a big band to create a winning sound. The group anticipated neither nomination.

Says Afro Bop Alliance bandleader Joe McCarthy: "I've never made a recording with the intention of trying to win an award. The idea behind the Grammy-nominated recording was to put some of our favorite music into big band arrangements."

This is his third album with Afro Bop Alliance and the second major collaboration with New York-based Caribbean Jazz Project led by Dave Samuels. The Washington Post calls it "an inspired pairing." Amplified by a talented team of brass and reed players, they forge a unique and powerful sound that gets audiences visibly excited and itching to dance.

Samuels wrote the opening high-energy track, "Rendezvous," and four other tunes on the CD. Recognized as the top mallet player of his generation, the award-winning artist shines on both the vibraphone and marimba. Says McCarthy, "Dave is a phenomenal improviser with a wonderful time feel. With him the groove is paramount."

The big band instrumentation lends extra color and power to the music. The CD also features much-praised remakes of Dizzy Gillespie favorite "Sole Sauce," the John Coltrane classic "Naima," and the more conventionally Latin "Stolen Moments" by Oliver E. Nelson. The new versions are receiving plenty of airplay.

Besides the Latin Grammy win and Grammy nomination, the project has yielded two books being published by Alfred Music. One features McCarthy's drum-set-playing techniques; the other taps Dave Samuels' knowledge as a mallet player.

For these musicians, the path has been short on glitz and glamour and long on hard work and discipline. Samuels is based in New York, as is conguero Roberto Quintero. The rest of the musicians on the recording live and work in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Afro Bop Alliance bandleader Joe McCarthy lives in Annapolis and holds the rank of Chief Petty Officer as a musician in the United States Naval Academy Band. He is the principal percussionist of the U.S. Naval Academy Concert Band and the drummer in the jazz ensemble.

McCarthy founded Afro Bop Alliance in 2002, combining the harmonic language of jazz and the rhythmic language of many different Afro Cuban rhythms. The group is infused with the talent and experience of many military band career musicians and others.

About the musicianship of his colleagues he says: "The level is second to none. They are serious and reliable. Had I not been in the Navy Band, I may not have met most of these world-class musicians."

McCarthy's mother is Italian, his father Irish, a testament to the complexity and fire of Latin Music. It's attracted a nation of converts like him who are devoted to the sound. Other band members have equally mixed heritage. What they have in common is in-depth musical training, extensive experience and a love for the distinctive rhythms of Latin music.

Says McCarthy, "When people really understand this music they realize that the categories used to identify all the styles are somewhat limiting. The music's going to happen," he says. "You follow your instincts and your heart and let the music evolve."

Austin-based recording artist Steve Bernal will debut his upcoming CD release Decibels in a series of local performances beginning with a special in-store preview at Waterloo Records & Video on February 18.

A 'cellist, bassist and composer whose work could be described as neoclassical or avant-garde, Mr. Bernal has played on 54 albums, toured with contemporary music artists including Alejandro Escovedo, and collaborated with eclectic pop artists such as Bill Callahan and Graham Reynolds.

"A deep passion for life and love inherent in my Latino blood has been the inspiration for my music," said Mr. Bernal. "And the culmination of the diverse musical genres I've played throughout my career is the inspiration for Decibels," he added.

An artist whose passion for music was first sparked as a child by the Cojunto dance music of his South Texas roots, Bernal was playing bass in downtown Houston nightclubs at age 15. His musical path led him to Austin in 1983, where he honed his skills playing a wide variety of musical styles.

Bernal's first national tour came in 1987 with a Reggae/Caribbean group called Dan Del Santo and His Professors of Pleasure, expanding his reach to new sounds from around the globe.

A recent collaboration with Argentine guitarist Federico Aubele led him down a new avenue, using computers to create new sounds.

From this new direction came one of the featured pieces of Decibels, "Pluto: Requiem for an Icy World," written by William Meadows for solo 'cello and computer-generated electronics in surround-sound.

Like the perpetual world traveler who is always looking ahead to the next unexplored land, Bernal's desire to conquer new horizons on the musical landscape has been the recurring theme of his career.

    Austin Performance Schedule

    18 -- Waterloo Records & Video, 600 N. Lamar Blvd., 5 PM
20 -- Mexican American Cultural Center, 600 River Street 8 PM

Slumdog Millionaire was four for four at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles this week. The film's soundtrack, composed by A.R. Rahman and M.I.A.'s first N.E.E.T./Interscope Records release, won Best Original Score For A Motion Picture. Talk went from underdog to slumdog, as Slumdog Millionaire took home Golden Globes in all categories it was nominated: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay - Motion Picture and Best Original Score - Motion Picture.

Deemed "the little-movie-that-could" by The New York Times, Slumdog not only slum-dunked the Golden Globes but today became top dog on iTunes, moving to the #1 position ahead of Taylor Swift and Kanye West.

A.R. Rahman's propulsive score is central to the modern grit and uplifting humanity that pervades Danny Boyle's intoxicating film. Says Rahman, "We wanted it edgy, upfront. Danny wanted it loud."

M.I.A. previously recorded much of her album Kala inside Rahman's Indian studio, although the two had never worked together until collaborating on the soundtrack's rumbling "O...Saya." Within the film, "O...Saya" is the kind of cinematic moment where image and sound co-exist. Inspired, M.I.A. made the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack the first release on her N.E.E.T. label (acronym for Not in Education, Employment or Training).

This award season M.I.A.'s poised for honors garnered not only by N.E.E.T.'s Slumdog Soundtrack, but the Grammys she is up for off her own album, Kala (nominated for Record Of The Year "Paper Planes," and Best Rap Song "Swagga Like Us").

A Golden Globe for M.I.A.'s first label release, top of iTunes and nominated for three Grammy's. Oscar anyone?

"Slumdog Millionaire so dominated the Golden Globes, winning all four of the awards for which it was nominated, that it appears to be a slam-dunk for multiple Oscar nominations and the front-runner for best picture." -- USA Today

Producer Helps Make 'Tha Carter III' One of 2008's Top Albums of The Year

One of New Orleans' best kept secrets, producer & vocal engineer Darius "Deezle" Harrison is smiling due to the three Grammy nominations for his work with Lil Wayne this past year. Deezle has been nominated for one (1) Grammy as a Songwriter for Best Rap Song of the Year "Lollipop" and for two (2) Grammys as a producer and mixer/engineer for Album of the Year "Tha Carter III."

Known for his innovative and distinct sound, Deezle earned a tag as the "go to producer" after producing seven tracks on Wayne's latest album including fan favorites "Mrs. Officer" and the mega hit "Lollipop" which was the most downloaded ring tone for 2008 according to Nielsen Soundscan. The chemistry between the duo is noticeable to any fan; so much so that Lil Wayne name drops Deezle on the track "Let The Beat Build," which he co-produced with Kanye West.

"I've worked so hard to get to this point in my career. This is the key that will open many doors to what I see is the start to what God has planned for me," states Deezle. "Working on this album was a great experience and I'm honored to be nominated for my work on Tha Carter III."

In addition to his Grammy nominated work on Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, Deezle has produced songs for Cash Money, Yung Joc, Huey, Teena Marie and even jazz artist Donald Harrison. Deezle also worked on Lil Wayne's first two Carter albums which released to rave reviews. He has engineered tracks like Destiny's Child "Soldier," featuring Lil Wayne, "Crying Out for Me," by Mario, the "Just Fine" remix by Mary J. Blige and Lloyd's "Girls around the World," also featuring Lil Wayne.

A classically trained dancer as well as an accomplished vocalist and musician who plays the guitar, drums, bass and saxophone, Deezle is currently growing his DRUM MAJOR Music label and brand. He says the DRUM MAJOR Music movement will be strong, with a sound easily recognizable, but difficult to copy.

Jam Session: America's Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World, a groundbreaking photographic exhibition organized and circulated by Meridian International Center in Washington, DC, will be on display in the Rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building between Tuesday, January 6 and Friday, January 23, 2009.

Jam Session chronicles one of America's most successful cultural diplomacy programs. Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and others served as cultural diplomats between the 1950s and the 1970s, transcending national boundaries, and making friends for our country.

Nearly 30 compelling images of musicians visiting countries across four continents provide a unique insight into this successful diplomatic initiative. Millions of people experienced concerts and thrilled to the many styles and variations of the remarkable American art form called Jazz. The exhibit is curated by Dr. Curtis Sandberg, Meridian International Center's Vice President for the Arts, together with Professor Penny M. Von Eschen, an expert in the history of jazz diplomacy and author of Satchmo Blows Up the World: Jazz Ambassadors Play the Cold War.

This exhibit will visit museums and cultural institutions around the United States through 2011. A second series of Jam Session exhibitions will travel the globe in a partnership between Meridian and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State between 2009 and 2012.

The images included in Jam Session beautifully capture the tempo and intimacy of the Jazz Ambassadors' tours on behalf of United States - and inspire us to consider new ways of sharing the best of America's culture with people abroad.

Meridian International Center, led by Ambassador Stuart Holliday, is a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to public diplomacy. Each Sunday throughout January, Sharing Miracles, a 30-minute public affairs television program that tells the compelling and inspirational stories of real patients, will feature country music superstar and six-time Grammy Award winner Naomi Judd. Sharing Miracles now airs on more than 235 television stations across the United States.

Judd, one-half of the celebrated mother-daughter country music duo, "The Judds," tells the incredible story of her journey from being a hard-working waitress and single mother with two children to being a world-wide music star. Daughters Wynonna -- herself now a successful solo musician -- and two-time Golden Globe-nominated actress Ashley Judd are also highlighted in the show.

All told, The Judds had 20 top-ten hits, including 15 that reached number one on the charts. This led to six Grammy awards, nine Country Music Association Awards and eight Billboard Music Awards. They have sold more than 20 million record albums worldwide, with six albums being certified platinum.

The resilience that drove Judd throughout her life quite possibly saved her life in 1990, when she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. As she says in this month's episode, "Wynonna and I were cruising through life with the top down, with sold-out coliseums, number-one singles, multi-platinum albums, and six Grammy awards. Our lives had surpassed anybody's wildest expectations."

Yet soon, the disease -- which she likely contracted when accidentally stuck by a needle in her earlier career as an intensive care-unit nurse -- crippled her. "I was terribly sick. I barely knew who I was, where I was," she says. "You're not really in pain, but you just want to give up because you can't imagine living like this every day. And unfortunately, my doctors didn't give me any hope. In fact, one doctor told me I had three years to live."

Judd credits her strong spirit, as well as her daughters, for inspiring her to overcome the often-fatal disease. "I thought, I'm going to live to help research, so we can find a vaccine, so we can find a cure, and so that people understand that when they have these experiences, it's a chance to reevaluate their whole lives."

Joining Judd in her fight to find a cure are scientists at America's pharmaceutical research companies, which currently have 388 potential new medicines in development to fight infectious diseases, such as Hepatitis C.

Speaking on this month's episode about the development of those potential new medicines is Schering-Plough scientist Dr. Janice Albrecht, who says, "There are some very exciting new medications that are being looked at. This is an era where there is a multitude of new drugs that are being added onto the standard therapy in the hopes that we can increase the number of patients that we can cure."

Previous episodes of Sharing Miracles have featured Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, a breast cancer advocate; Emmy Award-winning actor Joey Pantoliano, who suffers from clinical depression; Super Bowl Champion and former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, who has asthma; Olympic gold medal winners Mark Spitz (high cholesterol), Bruce Jenner (attention deficit disorder), and Greg Louganis (HIV); syndicated television talk show host Montel Williams, who suffers from multiple sclerosis; actor and Leave It To Beaver star Jerry Mathers, who is affected by diabetes; pop icon and Broadway star Deborah Gibson, who has suffered from devastating anxiety attacks; Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Len Dawson, who survived prostate cancer; and North Carolina State University women's basketball coach Kay Yow, a breast cancer survivor. February's Sharing Miracles will feature four-time Emmy Award nominee and former star of Family Ties Meredith Baxter, who works tirelessly as a breast cancer advocate after successfully battling the disease herself.

The new episode debuts January 4. Sharing Miracles airs on Sunday mornings on the following network-affiliated stations:
