September 2009 Archives

2009 has been quite a year for Morrissey. He's toured relentlessly, performing to sold-out audiences around the world. His 9th studio album, Years Of Refusal, saw Morrissey tie his highest US chart debut on the Billboard 200, and he's overseen upgraded and remastered versions of his '90s works Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted. Crowning what is undoubtedly his most productive year since his solo career began in 1988, SWORDS compiles 18 select songs released as b-sides of his 13 hit singles from his last four albums.

morrissey.jpg

As an artist who has always ensured his b-sides are of as outstanding quality as his singles and album tracks, SWORDS features some of Morrissey's finest material. 12 songs are collaborations with guitarist Alain Whyte, the rest co-written with guitarists Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias, and former keyboardist Michael Farrell. In keeping with the three remarkable studio albums covered in this period -- 2004's You Are The Quarry, 2006's Ringleader Of The Tormentors and Years Of Refusal -- the music is powerful and adventurous. The richness and expression of Morrissey's voice has never been greater. With unmatchable style, wit and insight, truths beneath the surface are laid bare. There are moments of personal reflection: "Munich Air Disaster 1958," for example, is a heartrending lament for the Manchester United players who died in the infamous plane crash, and for those who were left behind. The live cover version of David Bowie's 1973 song "Drive-In Saturday" reveals a little more of Morrissey's own teenage self, with its lyrics of amorous confusion modified to rhapsodize over The New York Dolls rather than the Rolling Stones. Chrissie Hynde makes a rare appearance, singing backing vocals on "Shame Is The Name."

The album was compiled by Morrissey who is surely in the rudest of creative health. They're subtly assembled and sequenced -- the feeling of approaching extinction in the beautiful "The Never-Played Symphonies" followed by a promise of a reunion in the afterlife on "Sweetie-Pie." As Morrissey said of the Tour Of Refusal in March, "all of our answers will be in our songs."

Initial quantities of SWORDS will come with a bonus disc featuring eight superb live performances recorded in Warsaw in July this year. This will include songs from Morrissey's last two albums and 1994's Vauxhall And I, plus The Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby," first heard on the group's 1986 b-side collection The World Won't Listen. In October and November, Morrissey and his band will also tour the UK and Europe, with new American dates scheduled for later in the year.

SWORDS will be released in the UK on October 26th and November 3rd in the US.

                           SWORDS Tracklist:

"We are really amazed by how well the tour has been received," said Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott. "Our fans have been absolutely fantastic. There's really no greater compliment than to be asked to keep on doing it so that's what we're going to do."

The tour's third leg will kick off in Reno, Nevada on Thursday, October 22nd. It highlights three decades of music from one of rock 'n' roll's greatest bands. With combined sales of 80 Million albums worldwide, 65 million from Leppard alone, fans will be treated to hits like "Photograph," "Rock Of Ages," "C'mon C'mon," "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Foolin'," "Bringin' On The Heartbreak," "Nine Lives," as well as Cheap Trick classics "I Want You To Want Me" and "Surrender."

The tour has played to massive crowds throughout the summer. Celebrity guests, some of which include Taylor Swift, Larry Mullen, Jr. Of U2, and Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, along with a wide range of fans of all ages have come to see the mega hit-filled show. Taylor Swift, who The New York Times described as "one of pop's finest songwriters, country's foremost pragmatist, and more in touch with her inner life than most adults," has surpassed the 10 million milestone for record sales. This 10 million number represents actual full albums sold - in addition, Taylor has sold over 20 million paid song downloads, more than any artist in country music history.

taylor_swift.jpg

19-year old Taylor, who writes all of her own material, released her now quadruple-platinum self-titled debut CD in October of 2006 on Big Machine Records, and followed it up with the Fearless album two years later. Fearless was the country's top selling album for the first 33 weeks of this year, and now has sales of more than 4 million copies in the US and Gold and Platinum certifications in fourteen countries spanning five continents.

Taylor's 10 million albums sold include the following:

    Taylor Swift 4,369,749 units US
    Fearless 4,020,725 units US
Taylor Swift & Fearless 1,297,059 units International
Beautiful Eyes 256,822 units (Wal-Mart only)
The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection 151,844 units

Taylor has had singles top both the Country and Pop radio charts, and sold more albums last year than any other recording artist, in any genre of music. Her #1 single "Love Story" has become a global sensation, topping airplay charts worldwide, in countries including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Taylor just celebrated her 4th consecutive #1 single in the US, and her fifth #1 out of her last six singles released.

Her sophomore release, Fearless, was voted 2009's Album of the Year by the Academy of Country Music, and reached double-platinum in just four weeks. Fearless was the year's biggest debut for any female artist, and the fourth highest debut of 2008, over all. Now quadruple-platinum, Fearless has spent more weeks in the #1 position atop Billboard's Top 200 all-genre CD sales chart than any other album this decade. Taylor currently holds the Billboard all-genre record for most Top 20 debuts in a calendar year. Taylor's first-ever headlining tour, the TAYLOR SWIFT FEARLESS 2009 TOUR, is the hottest ticket on the market, with capacity crowds packing arenas around the globe. This summer Taylor sold out a show at Madison Square Garden in one minute, and one at Los Angeles' STAPLES center in just two minutes.

In 2009 Taylor was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Crystal Milestone Award, given for Outstanding Achievement in Country Music. Taylor was the 2nd artist in history to receive this prestigious award -- Garth Brooks received the award in 2007. Also this year, Taylor won CMT Music Awards for Video of the Year and Female Video of the Year, awards she was also honored with in 2008. In addition, she won 2009 Teen Choice Awards for Choice Female Artist and Choice Music Album - Female Artist. Taylor was named 2008's Favorite Female Country Artist at the American Music Awards, and Top New Female Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. She was named Choice Breakout Artist at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards, and was honored as the 2008 Superstar of Tomorrow at the 10th Annual Young Hollywood Awards, making her the first musician to ever receive this prestigious award. In 2007 she won the CMA Horizon Award, as well as the Nashville Songwriters Association International's Songwriter / Artist of the Year, and she received a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist.
